ACME has three levels in its improv school. Level 2: Story is arguably the most important one. Why is that? It’s because in this intermediate class, you take all of the tools that you learned in Basic Improv and put them to good use constructing scenes. After all, what good is a bunch of tools if you never build anything with them? The ultimate goal of the ACME Program is to create storytellers —- either through sketch or improv. That’s what we do. We don’t focus on performing the kind of improv that some call “Game Shows”. Game Shows are made up of a bunch of short exercises that, while entertaining to watch, don’t have an overall story. ACME Brand Improv is all about giving you the kind of experience you might get from a play. It’s just that in our plays, no one knows their lines until the curtain rises.

Once Upon a Time...

We've all heard someone, at some point in our lives, TELL US A STORY. Most of us have even been the STORYTELLER from time to time. In fact, the art of storytelling goes as far back as the first time two words were rubbed together to form a sentence. It's a part of the HUMAN EXPERIENCE. It's a fundamental way in which we COMMUNICATE. It's also kinda hard... especially when you have no idea what the story is about until the words come tumbling out of your mouth.

LEVEL 2: STORY focuses on the tools that allow you to tell stories. You'll learn about structure, how to ARRANGE YOUR INFORMATION, how keep the story moving forward, and how be ENGAGING all the while. You'll learn about the different ways to tell a story, and about how to sift through all the possible choices you have when you're making stuff up so that THINGS MAKE SENSE. Maybe most importantly, you'll learn how to develop CHARACTERS that can deliver these stories in a fun and entertaining way. Remember, improv is basically the art of MAKING STUFF UP. Storytelling is the reason it's FUN to watch people do it.

Prerequisite Class: Level 1 - Basic (or Equivalent)

Students who have successfully completed and been moved up from Level 1: Basic are invited to enroll in Level 2: Intermediate. Additionally, ACME Comedy Theatre regularly holds free placement classes in which prospective students with previous improvisational training at other schools may audition to enter the Improv/Sketch program at Level 2, bypassing Level 1. Bring your best game to this audition and show us you have a strong command of the basic rules of improv!
